Is Facebook killing the Golden Goose?

This popped up in a my newsfeed last week written by a friend:

I am increasingly unhappy with Facebook. It now says I answered questions about brands which I did not, that I 'like' brands which I do not (Fosters, for goodness' sake!) and generally seems to have lost its original focus - enabling me to find and maintain good contact with people I value. I am now an advertising platform and (for now, at least) the fact that I can use FB for free is my pay. But for how much longer? Harrumph!

I think this comment is the tip of an iceberg which seems to be growing and it's a sentiment I'm increasingly coming across. Now I don't think it's going to be the iceberg that turns Facebook in to the Titanic but I do think it's interesting that in Facebook's efforts to monetize the site they are maybe not killing the golden goose but at the very least they are deeply irritating it.

I previously blogged about Facebook Sponsored Stories and the growing disquiet around them, of which my friend's comment above is symptomatic. But the pressure of course is now on for Facebook as a publicly quoted company and everyone will be watching their quarterly numbers and profit figures with an eagle eye.

Facebook do have a history of pushing the boundaries with users and then pulling back if there is enough of a backlash but of course the profit motive is now a lot greater, so it will be interesting to see.

If you have any similar Facebook disgruntled stories to the one above, let me know at philipbeeching@me.com
